| Door-to-door
"Door-to-door" involves simply going into bars, cafés, hotels, restaurants etc asking if there are any job vacancies. This is possibly the quickest way to find a job and is a very common way for young people to find work.
Why is this a good method? i. It makes the task of employing someone easier for a busy employer who may otherwise have to advertise for the position. ii. It shows to the employer that you have initiative. iii. It allows the employer to form an impression on you.
Where to look i. Types of business: most unskilled foreign people find jobs in the hotel and catering (bars, cafés, restaurants etc) sector. ii. Area: London is a very big city and there are many areas where there is a high concentration of bars, cafés, restaurants etc. Generally there are more opportunities in central areas but this is obviously not always the case. Many people find work in not so well areas.
Points to consider i. Present yourself well. This means wearing relatively smart clothes and having a positive approach. ii. Try different areas: if you try less well-known areas of London you may have less competition than in the centre. iii. Transport: you should think about transport to and from work. If you live too far away this can cause difficulties. Ideally you should find a job relatively near to where you work (employers also prefer this as it means that you are less likely to be late).
