| Tax Issues
Unless you are self-employed your employer is responsible for any tax and National Insurance due on your pay. This is deducted from the pay you earn in a system called Pay As You Earn (PAYE); this means the pay you receive already has any tax and National Insurance deducted.
Student tax exemption: Full time students working on a temporary basis during a vacation period are normally exempt from all tax. If this is your case you should ask your employer for the relevant form to complete.
Tax free allowance: Each week you are entitled to earn around £80 free of tax and National Insurance. The financial year starts on 5th April and the weekly allowance starts from this date each year; this means that if you start work in, for example, July you are entitled to to earn the total of weekly allowances (approx. £1500) from 5th April of that year before paying any tax.
Tax rates: You can see uptodate information on all aspects of tax and national insurance on the UK official tax office web site.
